Welcome to PlantexCY

Cyprus has a rich and rare biodiversity, especially regarding plants species. Endemic taxa constitute an important part of Flora of Cyprus and a natural heritage of the country, since endemic species manage to survive through the process of natural selection, over millennia.

Nowadays, much attention is being paid to the health-promoting effects of local medicinal plants, because of multiple beneficial effects and negligible adverse effects. Medicinal plants serve as rich sources of pharmacologically active substances such as antioxidants, phenolic compounds, terpenoids and other secondary metabolites. Several of the endemic plants are known to have medicinal properties since ancient times and have been used in traditional medicine to treat a range of diseases.

PlantexCY consortium conducts research to investigate the phytochemical profile and the beneficial properties of different plant organs (e.g. leaves, stem, seeds, flowers, fruit) of selected endemic plants of Cyprus. Beneficial properties will be studied in terms of anti-cancer properties as well as the potential to be used as plant biostimulants. The outcome of this research is anticipated to shed a light in the undiscovered potential of Cypriot endemic plants and prepare the grounds for a systematic and comprehensive study of more endemic species in the future.
